The American Elm tree is currently endangered. Disease, not the logging industry, has killed millions of American Elm in the past 10 years. But there is help on the way….
The Elm Research Instituted has produced genetically altered disease resistant trees, named the American Liberty Elm. These altered Elms have a natural resistance to the Dutch Elm Disease. 250,000 seedlings were distributed by the institute. The Boy Scouts of American and other organizations have helped tremendously with seedling distribution and planting.
Genetically altered trees in addition to planting seedlings are helping this species survive and possibly flourish in the United States.
