Jiffy Peat Pellets/Pots
These are the greatest invention since the Toaster. Just kidding.
I remember when I was a kid in New Jersey back in the 70’s, I used to start our garden using these Jiffy peat pellets. My dad’s friend owned a nursery and would give us 25 of these peat pellets to get our garden going. My dad used to work on his airplane. He owned a Beachcraft Bonanza. Nice plane!
Anyway these peat disc’s are dried and compressed when you buy them. They pop up and expand when you soak them with water. They are much easier to use then small pots that have to be filled with soil and even just planting seeds in the ground outside. If you use Jiffy Peat Pellets to start your vegetable garden, you can start them in earlier spring or late winter by putting them indoors by a window. It may be be too cool for seeds to germinate outdoors. When Spring rolls around, the plants will be ready to transplant outside and they will be bigger than if you planted seeds outside.
Peat is a great media to germinate seeds and grow any type of plant. It’s rich with nutrients like nitrogen. When you transplant your plants into your outside garden, just dig a hole and drop the whole peat pot into it then cover it up. Done
