How Do I Apply Fertilizer to My Garden?
It really depends on what type of fertilizer you plan to use. If you’re using something like an agricultural grade all purpose fertilizer maybe a 5 10 10 fertilizer then you need to follow the directions on the bag or follow the advice of a professional horticulturalist. Commercial fertilizers can burn or kill plants if too much is applied, so be careful.
Here are some instructions I found for a bag of 5 10 5 agricultural grade all purpose fertilizer.
- Do not get fertilizer directly on plants or seeds
- Keep fertilizer at least 3 ” away from plants
- Mix fertilizer in with soil
- For gardens, apply 1.5 lbs per 100 square feet or a 10′ x 10′ garden
- Water after applying.
- Fertilize every 4 weeks
If this sounds too complicated then go the easy route with fertilizing…use compost and worm castings.
Worm castings alone has much more nutrients than any agricultural grade fertilizer plus it contains organic material, minerals, beneficial microbes and enzymes. It’s just a much better way to fertilize your garden or trees. Compost and worm castings are 100% organic and 100% safe. Compost and worm castings will never harm plants no matter how much you apply. It easier to apply too. You can mix it with the soil or just dump it on top of the soil. Either method works great.
