How Does Slow Release Fertilizer Work?

Slow Release Fertilizers

Slow release fertilizers are made with layers to enable partial release over time. It is very similar to time release medications but not as precise.

So what causes a layer to release?

Layer release is NOT Time Activated. I wish this were true. Anyway, layer release can be caused by heat and/or water. So if you water more often or it rains frequently, then the fertilizer will be released more rapidly. The same goes for heat. If you have a heat wave, more fertilizer will be released. It’s definitely not the best application of fertilizer. You may get too much fertilizer too soon which can harm plants.

Natural fertilizers like compost, worm castings, rock phosphate, azomite and Greensand naturally and slowly release minerals and nutrients into the soil. You never have to worry about over fertilizing with these. These fertilizers will never harm your plants.

Chemical fertilizers may seem great when you see your plants growing fast and green BUT they will be more prone to disease and pests.

A 2 inch layer of compost will provide all the nutrients your plants will need over the entire season. Do it once and forget it. It’s that simple.

Remember this: feed your soil NOT your plants.
