What are Worm Castings?

What are worm castings?

Worm castings or worm humus or Vermicompost is the waste product or excrement from the digestive system of worms. Think of worm castings as the same as horse or cow manure. It’s 100% organic fertilizer.

Worms feed solely on dead or freshly fallen (not living plants) plant matter. They have an amazing digestive system that breaks down the organic material and adds beneficial microbes and enzymes. Worm castings are the most nutrient rich plant fertilizer on the Earth. The nutrients, minerals, carbon and nitrogen are broken down and are easily absorbed by the plants’ root system. Plants will explode with new life when fertilized with worm castings. They will grow faster, produce more flowers and/or fruit and turn bright green. Worm castings will also help prevent disease.

So where can you get worm castings?

You can buy worm castings locally from worm farms. It’s much cheaper than ordering them online plus it’s fresher. I found a worm farm in Arizona. I plan on buying some worms for my garden and some worm castings. But if it is not available in your area, you can easily buy worm castings online. The price is around $10 for a 8 quart bag. Another great thing about worm castings is you don’t need very much. A little goes a long way. In a 4′ x 4′ garden you may only need to spread about 2 cups of worm castings over the soil.
